Apr 2 2012

SAN FRANCISCO, April 2, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- In celebration of National Humor Month, which is observed during the month of April, Zoosk.com, the romantic social network, recently surveyed nearly 700 American adults to gather their thoughts about the role of humor in relationships. The survey respondents included singles, people in a committed relationship, and married couples. Interestingly, the responses were nearly identical on every question among respondents, regardless of relationship status. To view an infographic showing Zoosk's findings, visit http://blog.zoosk.com/2012/03/30/zoosk-national-humor-month-survey-finds-humor-is-an-aphrodisiac/.

Zoosk's findings include:

Humor can be an aphrodisiac!

  • Forget the oysters, humor can be a powerful aphrodisiac! 87% of men and 74% of women say that humorous flirtation can get them in the mood for sex.

Humor is the most important quality in a relationship, besides good chemistry.

  • 64% of Americans agree that besides having good chemistry a "sense of humor" is the most important quality for a successful relationship.
  • What did the other respondents think? 17% of women said "financial stability" was the most important quality in a successful relationship while "good looks" and "intelligence" tied with 13% of the vote each among men.

Americans have a penchant for those who act "goofy."

  • 43% of Americans prefer a partner who has a "goofy" sense of humor. Second to "goofy" is dry or witty humor, which 29% of Americans prefer.
  • Apparently most Americans do not care for sarcasm (15%), "bathroom humor" (7%), or self-deprecating humor (7%).

Men need to be cautious when it comes to cracking jokes.

  • The majority (59%) of women report that they have had their feelings hurt by a joke gone bad by a significant other.
  • Only 40% of men have had their feelings hurt by a partner's joke that went too far.

When it comes to dating, serious singles can get a second chance!

  • 72% of women say that if someone does not make them laugh on a first date, they would give the person a second chance.
  • Men are even more forgiving. 87% of men say they would give their date a second chance if they failed to make them laugh on the first date.

"Whether you're dating or in committed partnership, humor is an important part of any relationship," said Laurie Davis, founder of eFlirt Expert. "Humor can do so many things – it can turn around an awkward situation, create a memorable moment, and, as we saw in Zoosk's survey, humor can help your sex life!"

The Zoosk poll was conducted online in March 2012 and fielded 698 responses from Americans who are fans of Zoosk on Facebook.
