In Keynote Speech, Building Trades President Sean McGarvey Outlines Vision for Union Construction Growth

WASHINGTON, April 30, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- President Barack Obama today expressed his frustrations at the continued resistance of some in Congress to block efforts that would invest in the re-building of America's infrastructure.

The President spoke before a capacity crowd of 3,000 delegates to the Building and Construction Trades Department's 2012 National Legislative Conference in Washington, DC.

"So, let me ask you," the President said. "What's a better way to make our economy stronger? Giving another tax break to every millionaire and billionaire in the country? Or building the roads and bridges and broadband networks that will help our businesses sell more goods around the world?"

Prior to President Obama's remarks, Sean McGarvey, the newly elected President of the Building and Construction Trades Department delivered a forceful keynote address that centered upon building the key relationships at both the corporate and community levels that will enable us to more effectively deliver the value proposition of the union construction industry.

"…whether they be economic, political or social," said McGarvey, "the challenging circumstances we face today now make it incumbent upon all of us in this room to aggressively take ownership in everything we do, and to compel people to see it and acknowledge it."

Other speakers at today's conference included, Tom Fanning – President and CEO of Southern Company; Tim Kaine – Former Governor of Virginia and current Democratic Candidate for U.S. Senate; Representative Jon Runyan (R-NJ); and Mark Ridley-Thomas – Supervisor; Los Angeles County.

The Building and Construction Trades Department is an alliance of 13 national and international unions that collectively represent over 2 million skilled craft professionals in the United States and Canada.
