SAN DIEGO, Nov. 5, 2012 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- Insulindependence (IN) opened its online application process for the 2013 Junior Captain program.

IN fosters next generations of leadership in the diabetes community through Junior Captain programs. The goal is to assist youth living with diabetes in building confidence to achieve personal fitness goals.

This season, IN will be offering more scholarships, staff support, and program options for participating kids and families.

IN's volunteer leaders (Captains) use skills learned at the University of Insulindependence to mentor a youth living with diabetes in a one-on-one setting as they prepare for a triathlon, relay race or group expedition. The programs also offer opportunities for adolescents to interact with their peers in fun and challenging environments. Ultimately, program participants develop lifelong relationships that serve as a foundation of support as they each continue along in their journey with diabetes.

This summer, with help from her peers and mentors living with type 1 diabetes, Kendal was able to complete her first triathlon at age nine. "It's hard to put into words how much Kendal gained from this program," said her mother Shana Fisher. "She was inspired by her new friends and wants to do more. She completed another triathlon and she decided it was time to start using an insulin pump. These are all huge steps that have happened since Kendal's involvement with Insulindependence."

Youth ages 9-18 may choose to participate in one of IN's recreation-specific clubs based on age and area of interest. Accepted applicants are paired with a Captain who will be a resource and serve as a role model for Junior Captains as they work together toward a personal fitness goal.

The culmination of the program takes place at one of several signature events, where Captains and Junior Captains work together as peers at a triathlon, relay race, or group expedition. Signature event activities generally take place over the course of a long weekend, with opportunities for everyone to share in a lifetime experience.

Participants are asked to fundraise to cover the cost of the program. However, financial assistance is available from Insulindependence through the Pamela C. Lane Youth Scholarship Fund for those who qualify.

Parents of young people with diabetes who may benefit from this type of experience are encouraged to submit a preliminary application online. Applications are accepted through February 15, 2013.
