A Brief Blog Profile: Aquarium Drunkard

by Thomas Hynes

Lately, I've noticed a movement underway in the Los Angeles music scene. It's not enough to call it retro. People are embracing older, perhaps once forgotten sounds, dusting them off and giving them another listen. It's coming across in what people listen to, but it's also showing up in the new music being made. Take for example The Allah Las. There's very little out there that sounds like them. And yet, they sound so familiar. Their sound is at once brand new and classic.

The Allah Las are just one example. The truth is there is a new musical progression happening in Southern California. And for my money, the best best place to read about it is on Aquarium Drunkard. It's actually one of the best place to read about music in general. Or anyway, it's one of my favorites. The site is based out of L.A., but the music comes from all over. It's also not constrained to contemporary music. The site's Best of 2011 post includes nods to St. Vincent. James Blake, Panda Bear and Bon Iver. Then on another post, you'll read (and hear!) about this 1971 cover of "Tomorrow Never Knows." On a third post, you'll read about Michael Kiwanuka. I'll be honest. This guy could be from either 1971 or 2012. But in any decade, he's awesome.

I should probably mention that Aquarium Drunkard also does interviews, news, mp3 samples and sessions. (There's even a satellite radio show, too.) In their own words, the site's looking to bridge "the gap between contemporary indie with vintage garage, psych, folk, country, New Orleans funk, r&b, soul and everything that falls in between." That might sound eclectic and all over the place. But maybe have a listen around the blog first. You might just like what you hear.

News Widget

Our widget allows you to display PR Newswire content on your site with very little back-end programming required.   You not only get the headline, but also the body of text of the news release, keeping the user on your site at all times.  In order to do so, the difference between our Widget and other widgets is at the end of the sign-up process, you will be provided with 2 pieces of source code -- one for the page where the Widget itself will be displayed and one for the pages that will display the body of text of each news release.   In addition, the sign-up process allows you to have 100% control over every aspect of the Widget's appearance, so that the Widget can blend in fully with the look and feel of your website.... Here it is in action on my bike blog.
