A Brief Blog Profile: Brainy Gamer
by Thomas Hynes
Brainy Gamer might finally put to rest the notion that video games will rot your mind. Or anyway, they didn't rot this blogger's mind. The site describes itself as a "thoughtful conversation about video games." Thoughtful is one way to describe the blog. Thorough is another. And intelligent (or "brainy") is another still. The posts can easily run over 1,000 words and cover aspects of the gaming world other blogs might pass over.
Or as I might suspect, the other video game bloggers would get distracted by, well, video games. But not the Brainy Gamer. This guy really dissects things. Here he makes the case for sports games. In the post, he implores the reader to rethink the way they approach the genre. Here in this passage, he breaks down the appeal of narrative-driven versus sports games. "If narrative games create a possibility space for players to generate or discover their own stories, sports games offer a captivating vision of that possibility space, unconstrained by branching-paths or author-driven plot points." Like I said, video games don't always rot one's mind.
Truthfully, video games are quite exceptional. They're technically astounding. They require story. They require skill to play. They even require brains. Or anyway, reading this blog sure does.
