A Brief Blog Profile: SoulBounce
by Thomas Hynes
SoulBounce was started to expand the conversation of urban music "beyond the over-exposed and the obvious." The site is run by a group of editors and contributors from around the world. Each one of them is committed to "aggressively providing its audience with frequent daily updates, media and entertaining op-eds." In other words, they not only review music, they also provide a lot of music. You can hear their opinion on a song. Or you can hear the song yourself and make your own decisions.
For instance, on Soul Bounce you can hear this previously hidden Raphael Saadiq song. (And you should hear it. It's nice.) Or you can read interviews, like this one with Murs or this one with Goapele. And just to be clear, everything on here isn't glowing. This review of Bon Iver's cover of Donny Hathaway (and Bonnie Raitt) on Fallon is a prime example of them speaking their minds.
Now, I'm personally a big fan of Bon Iver (and Donny Hathaway for that matter), but the assessment served up on Soul Bounce is fair. It's tough, but it's fair. What makes it fair is that it comes straight from the heart of a true music lover; someone who appreciates the cover artist's effort, but also wishes to retain the sanctity of one of their all-time favorite songs. I get that. This is about the music, not necessarily the artists.
