A Brief Blog Profile: Velveteen Rabbi
by Thomas Hynes
When Velveteen Rabbi launched in 2003, the author wasn't even a rabbi. But, rabbinic school was just around the corner. Now, quite obviously, this blog deals quite a bit with Judaism. But, it's so much more than that. For instance the rabbi is so much more than just a rabbi. She's also a wife. She's also a mother. And as any visitor of this blog will quickly learn, she's also a poet.
And that's what's so interesting about the Velveteen Rabbi. It varies. It adapts. And it's almost certainly never what you expect. For instance, here she reviews a book called Wrestling in the Daylight. What's interesting about this post is the book author's struggle with reconciling his own love of Israel with his concern over the situation in Palestine. Scrolling down the page, you'll see a poem called " Morning Cartoons, Morning Prayer," where the rabbi balances the obligations of piety with those of parenthood. Scrolling even further down the page, you'll read a prayer for Syria.
To some this may seem unfocused. To some this may seem all over the map. But, that's sort of the way life is, right? To me this blog is not without direction at all. Rather this blog has a balance between the lives we have and the spirituality to which we aspire.
