Support for Indian Point License Renewal Announced by Greenpeace Co-Founder Dr. Patrick Moore and New York AREA
Story Summary:Entergy, the owner of the Indian Point Nuclear power plants announced that it will seek a license extension to operate its plants for another 20 years. Supporters of Indian Point who welcome the news included the New York Affordable Reliable Electricity Alliance found on the Internet at area-alliance.org and Dr. Patrick Moore, the co-founder of Greenpeace who supports nuclear power to reduce harmful greenhouse gas emissions. Dr. Patrick Moore:
"The reason to keep the Indian Point plants operating is because they are safe, reliable and cost effective power sources and they are clean. If you shut down Indian Point and take out 2000 megawatts out of the grid in New York, what are you going to replace it with?" Indian Point's two plants generate 30 percent of the power supply for New York City including much of the power for the MTA. Dr. Patrick Moore:
"In order to reduce air pollution and reduce greenhouse gas emissions in New York, we need to keep Indian Point and the other nuclear reactors here online."
