CRUISING WORKS OF ART CATCHING ATTENTION ON L.A. STREETS
CarMax Celebrates Five Stores in L.A. with Five Painted Personality Cars
RICHMOND, Va. (March 31, 2005)- People are looking at and talking about the five moving works of art now cruising the streets of Los Angeles, California. To celebrate the company's growth in the L.A. market, CarMax, Inc. (NYSE: KMX), commissioned five emerging Southern California-based artists to paint five different styles of cars that reflect well-known L.A. personalities. CarMax, the nation's leading specialty retailer of used cars, now has five stores in the L.A. area, with the recent opening of two new stores in Irvine and Ontario.
"Southern Californians have long been famous for finding creative ways to make their cars an expression of their own personalities," said Austin Ligon, president and chief executive officer of CarMax, Inc. "We created these cars to mark our growth in Los Angeles and to communicate that CarMax has a car for every personality in L.A. With our no-haggle pricing, huge selection, guaranteed quality and fun car shopping experience, we have made an art out of buying a used car for more than 1 million car shoppers nationwide."
The five cars that celebrate L.A.'s culture of personalities include:
- A Surfer Car (a Nissan Xterra painted by surfer artist Glenn Martin)
- A Hollywood Car (a Mercedes SLK convertible painted by Hollywood artist Ron Pastucha)
- A Soccer Mom Car (a Dodge Caravan painted by artist and soccer mom Kathleen Keifer)
- An Urban Art Car (a Nissan Armada painted by urban artist Man One)
- A Tuner Car (a Honda Civic painted by graphic artist Asylm)
"I think the idea of customizing your car with art is really fitting," said Ron Pastucha, who painted the Hollywood Car. "People like to express who they are and what they are about through their vehicle."
For several of the artists, painting the cars was a personal experience. "This is the first time that I combined my fine art gallery life along with my soccer mom personal hectic life," said artist Kathleen Keifer, who painted the Soccer Mom Car. "I'm a soccer mom and artist and finally in this project I got to do both things."
The five cars are touring throughout L.A. and will be appearing at a variety of events from April through June. All five cars will be on display at CarMax's new store in Irvine at 9501 Research Drive on April 1, 2005 during the retailer's grand opening event.
After the tour, all five cars will be donated to charity for auction.
