11-Year-Old Launches Line of Luxury Scarves Scarves By Tati, Up-and-Coming Fabric Designer

NEW YORK, Oct. 12, 2012 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1792546534/scarves-by-tati-11-yr-old-fabric-designer

Tatiana Meyer, a sixth grader from New York City, launched a line of luxury scarves on the popular site Kickstarter this week.  She is only the 2nd young person to be accepted onto the site, and within the first few days, her project was listed in the top 3 Most Popular out of the 132 projects in Fashion.

Tatiana's hand-drawn designs are turned into high-quality silk and cotton fabrics and then individually sewn by Marie Smart, a clothes designer and patternmaker who normally works with well-known fashion designers.  "Tatiana has an amazing gift for colors and patterns. Her designs are as good or better than many of the top designers I see today."

And her early backers have been unequivocal:

- Internet celebrity Ze Frank (A Show with Ze Frank) bought a silk pocket scarf moments after hearing of the launch, "I love that young artists today have an opportunity to participate directly in the entire creative process - it's inspiring!"

- New York Times Science writer Claudia Dreifus called Tatiana "brilliant!"

- "I love that I can support a budding artist and get my holiday shopping done early at the same time!" says Jamie Bernstein, Globe-trotting concert narrator and producer of the upcoming documentary El Sistema USA!

Tatiana has been drawing remarkably sophisticated designs since she was five, first creating greeting cards and now fabrics out of those drawings.  Her artistic medium of choice: her dad's shirt cardboards.  And her process is the stuff of family lore: her father reads aloud from Harry Potter, Tolkien, or even Checkov, and her designs are shaped by the power of the words.

"When he reads, my hands get taken away.  I can look at each drawing years later and remember exactly what he was reading."

Tatiana is not the first artist in her family; there has been a serious and in some cases world-famous artist in the family for the past six generations.  John Mix Stanley, her great, great grandfather was a renowned painter of the early American Indian in the West, and had an extensive collection at the Smithsonian during his day.  Her grandfather, Fred Meyer, was a well-known sculptor in the 1950s and 1960s whose work has been collected by art museums around the world.

Says Tatiana, "Some day I'd love to see someone I don't know walking down the street wearing one of my designs – that is what I hope for most."
