Survey Finds Local Collaborations with Non-Profits Provide a Hand-Up to the Underserved

Catholic Charities USA's quarterly Snapshot Survey highlights how working together helps people thrive

ALEXANDRIA, Va., Nov. 7, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Catholic Charities USA announced the results of its 2012 2nd Quarter Snapshot Survey, finding local agencies are placing a greater emphasis on partnerships that provide long-term skill building aimed at helping the underserved not just survive, but thrive.  The survey findings, based on responses of 54 agencies which serve more than 3.6 million clients, indicate that eighty percent (80%) of agencies collaborate with members of the business community.

"Unfortunately, too many Americans today are finding it impossible to make ends meet, despite hard work that often includes long hours at numerous jobs," said Rev. Larry Snyder, President of Catholic Charities USA (CCUSA). "Enabling long-term self-sufficiency in addition to providing short term relief is incredibly important in helping people climb the ladder out of poverty.  Collaboration between service organizations and local business helps facilitate these programs which foster long term solutions."

Other noteworthy survey findings include:

  • Catholic Charities agencies are partnering with at least 10 businesses on average. In the survey, 35 agencies named more than 375 specific partners;
  • Agencies partnered most often with banks (60% of agencies), major retailers (60%), and healthcare providers and hospitals (40%);
  • The majority of agencies reported an increase in requests for help relative to the previous quarter from populations including the homeless (65%), the working poor (63%), families (58%), immigrants (56%), and seniors (56%);
  • The greatest areas of unmet need were in emergency financial assistance, utilities assistance, counseling/mental health services, and immigration services;
  • Agencies reported unmet need (keeping a waiting list or turning away clients) in a total of 159 program or service areas, an average of 3 areas of unmet need per agency.

The online survey was distributed to CCUSA membership during July/August 2012 to measure programs and services provided between April 1 and June 30, 2012.  Responses were received from 54 Catholic Charities agencies in 31 different states who served approximately 3,621,220 people in need over the last year.  In 2011, Catholic Charities USA and its network of local agencies served more than 10 million individuals.
