Texas representative urges bipartisan cooperation in meetings at the White House, Congress

WASHINGTON, Dec. 7, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- This week, Campaign to Fix the Debt member Stephen Brown of Missouri City, Texas, met with White House officials as part of a state delegation invited to discuss the real impact of fiscal cliff threats on individuals across the country.  Representing working class Texans, Brown stressed the importance of creating sensible, bi-partisan solutions that will protect the economy and hardworking Americans.

"In Texas, we tend to focus on results," said Brown, who is chairman of the Fort Bend County Democratic Party. "I was honored to meet with President Obama's advisors and I certainly conveyed that sense of pragmatic optimism with them. Too much is riding on this issue to let political gridlock derail our already fragile economy. Our leaders are sent to Washington to work through these tough issues. I look forward to working with the Administration and Members of Congress as we raise awareness at the grassroots level on this important issue."

On Tuesday, Mr. Brown met with several Members of Congress as well, including Rep. Al Green (D-TX9), Rep. Gene Green (D-TX29), and Rep. Pete Olson (D-TX22). In those talks he urged lawmakers to work together on bipartisan solutions.

"Today's debt negotiations boil down to real consequences for Americans across the country. Speaking with Members of Congress, they agree a real solution will take compromise. For that reason, we can't expect to solve our debt problems through a unilateral approach. It's going to take a comprehensive and thoughtful plan to move our nation forward.  Each day lawmakers hold out just creates more uncertainty for families, businesses and investors, and makes the challenge of reaching a deal before January 1 even greater," Brown noted.

Stephen Brown serves as a steering committee member of the Campaign to Fix the Debt Texas chapter. The Campaign is a bipartisan coalition of more than 315,000 individuals active in 17 states across the country whose members come from a diverse range of social, political and economic backgrounds.  The Campaign believes that a viable deal should be based off a framework that leaves all debt-reduction options on the table and raises revenues, cuts wasteful spending, and ensures the long-term sustainability of important social programs.
