Advanced technology helps new Impala earn top safety score

PLAINFIELD, Ill., July 22, 2013 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- Safety first is not just a good mantra for grade school shop class, it also is a rallying cry for the 2014 Chevy Impala in Plainfield, IL, as the new flagship sedan recently earned a five-star safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Although the new Chevy Impala earned five-star ratings in frontal and side impact protection, the overall score, in large part, was achieved due to its advanced preventative safety features like radar and audio and visual alerts that help make drivers aware of crash threats. With these warnings, drivers will become mindful of potential danger sooner and have more time to react.

Among the top safety features is the full-speed-range adaptive cruise control, which uses radar technology to sense traffic ahead of the vehicle. When drivers approach cars traveling at a slower speed or are driving in heavy traffic, the Impala will adjust its speed and even come to a complete stop to adjust to the speed of the vehicles ahead. This marks the first implementation of full-speed-range adaptive cruise control in a Chevy vehicle.

The 2014 Chevy Impala features another first for the automaker — crash imminent braking. Like the adaptive cruise control, it uses radar to alert drivers to collision threats. If drivers don't react quick enough or fail to react altogether, the Impala will intervene and apply the brakes to help avoid the accident.

Other safety features include blind zone alerts, lane departure warnings, ultrasonic rear park assist, and forward collision alerts.
