DOVER, N.J., April 26, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- As a major supporter of mathematics education in the United States, Casio is proud to announce it is a title sponsor of the 30th Colorado Mathematical Olympiad, which takes place Friday, April 26th at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs. As the title sponsor of the event, Casio's educational technology, including 50 fx-115ES PLUS and 50 fx-9860II worth more than $4,000, will be awarded to student competitors.

"The Mathematical Olympiad represents a joint effort between school districts, higher education institutions and the community to bring math to the forefront, and Casio is proud to be a part of the event," said Takero Itonaga, senior general manager of Casio's Consumer Products Division. "As a sponsor, we are taking the necessary steps to help create engaging, exploratory experiences for students that will hopefully encourage growth and understanding of mathematics as a whole."

The Mathematical Olympiad is the only event of its kind in the United States. More than 400 middle and high school level students from Colorado are given four hours to solve five problems and present essay-type solutions, which are kept secret until the day of the competition. Winners are chosen by a panel of 15-25 individuals who judge the students' problem-solving ability, as well as their overall creativity and ingenuity.

"We take great pride in challenging students to think outside of the box and apply mathematical concepts in novel ways," said Dr. Alexander Soifer, founder and professor, Interdepartmental Studies at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs. "With Casio's support, we are continuing our quest to foster a deeper understanding of mathematics in and out of the classroom to help shape tomorrow's leaders."

This year, Casio will host two workshops for coaches and teachers during the student testing period that pertain to integrating technology within the classroom:

  • Middle school level – "Uncommon Calculator Tasks that Get to the Core; Using Technology to Build Middle School Concepts"
  • High school level –"Implementing Common Core and Transforming Student Perspectives Through Technology"

Both workshops will also discuss complex mathematical investigations that promote abstract and quantitative reasoning skills.
