A full calendar of events is available at www.nmblackhistorymonth.com.
The purpose of the 2013 Black History Month Festival is to promote multiculturalism and increase awareness of the contributions that African Americans have made to New Mexico. "I believe each event of this festival showcases the culture and talent of African Americans and encourages engagement and participation by the entire Albuquerque community," says Cathryn McGill, founder/director of The New Mexico Black History Month Organizing Committee (NMBHMOC). Festival highlights include a "staycation" package that offers Albuquerque and New Mexico residents an affordable vacation getaway right here at home.
Title sponsors for the event are the City of Albuquerque, County of Bernalillo, Blue Cross Blue Shield New Mexico and a host of other corporate sponsors and individual donors. Each event of the festival focuses on a combination of education, community, culture and education. Signature events include "Roots Revival," an original cabaret production chronicling the history of African Americans from West Africa to the present, and a 1920's themed Cotton Club Gala featuring recording artist CeCe Peniston and The Cotton Club Revue. The 2013 New Mexico Black History Month Festival also has free events great for all ages such as WorkItOut Day at the Albuquerque Convention Center and New Mexico's Gospel Best Competition at the newly renovated Hiland Theater. Tickets for "Roots Revival" and the Cotton Club Gala can be purchased on the Black History Month Festival website.
The New Mexico Black History Month Festival encourages all New Mexicans to learn about the contributions that African Americans have made to the state and to the nation throughout the years.
