41 Pennsylvania Communities are Eligible for Historic Preservation Grants

Must Apply by Jan. 15, 2010

HARRISBURG, Pa., Dec. 18 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Communities leading the way in historic preservation in Pennsylvania are encouraged to apply to the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, or PHMC, for historic preservation grants. Cities, boroughs and townships that are designated by the National Park Service as "certified local governments" (CLG) can compete for more than $116,000 in available funds.

"Historic preservation safeguards a community's heritage, making it available to future generations for civic enjoyment and educational activities," said Barbara Franco, PHMC executive director. "It also fosters civic beauty, bolsters community pride and can improve business opportunities in many locales."

CLG Grants are available to support cultural resource surveys, National Register nominations, historic preservation planning and development, archaeology, and staffing and training. Eligible projects must be undertaken between August 1, 2010 and July 31, 2011.

Municipalities do not have to achieve CLG status by the time the grant application is due. But if awarded a grant, CLG status must be designated by the contract start date in order to receive grant funds.

Grant applications are due by Jan. 15, 2010. The federally funded reimbursement grant program requires a 50/50 funding match. Approximately $116,750 will be awarded through a competitive selection process.

Applicants for PHMC grants are required to use the web-based electronic grant application process (eGrant). For grant program guidelines and eGrant application instructions, visit the PHMC website at http://www.phmc.state.pa.us.
