ABA's Teach Children to Save At-Home Program
ABA Education Foundation Celebrates 13th Annual Program with New Web Site and Pledge
"Adults aren't alone in feeling the pressure of the economy; our children are too," explains
The new Web page brings the traditional classroom version of the Teach Children to Save program into homes. The site offers tips for youth and their parents on how to start saving, open a savings account and master other personal finance skills.
More importantly, the site features the Savers' Pledge that youth can print and sign as they vow to become lifelong savers. The pledge calls on young people to start saving by handling their money responsibly. To start saving, pledges will:
S - Set aside at least $2 for every $10 I earn or receive as a gift.
A - Ask my parent(s) or guardian to help me open a savings account and if
I have one, I'll deposit money regularly.
V - Vow to put needs before wants when spending.
E - Encourage my friends to S-A-V-E too.
Fisher explained that the pledge is a great tool for parents too, saying, "Today's kids have never heard the word recession, let alone lived through one. Economics can be confusing, but the pledge can make saving a family affair."
Also new this year, the foundation challenged bankers to encourage 1 million students to adopt a lifestyle of saving. More than 11,000 bankers have accepted the call to teach savings lessons.
