NEW YORK, Aug. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Spike Lee, the Oscar and Emmy-nominated
director and writer of feature films, music videos and commercials, will
direct the first music video by Verve recording artist Lizz Wright. Wright, a
23-year old native of Hahira, Georgia, released her critically-acclaimed debut
recording, Salt, in May of this year.
The video will be for the song "Open Your Eyes, You Can Fly," which was
penned by Chick Corea and Neville Potter and was a hit for Brazilian singer
Flora Purim in the mid-70s.
Lee will shoot the video on the 25th and 26th of August on Martha's
Vineyard. Lee, who is considered one of the most important and influential
filmmakers working today, recently wrapped the documentary Jim Brown:
All-American for HBO and co-authored a children's book Please, Baby, Please
with his wife, Tonya Lewis Lee.
Ron Goldstein, President and CEO of the Verve Music Group, enthused "We
are obviously thrilled that Spike Lee has signed on to direct a video for our
rising young star, vocalist Lizz Wright. It is especially gratifying that
Spike discovered Lizz totally on his own and reached out to us after hearing
her music and seeing her perform live. We're all very excited to be working
with such a visionary director." Lee commented, "She [Wright] is a wonderful
new artist and I'm happy to be directing her video."
Since signing with Verve, Wright has toured the country as a headliner and
has opened for such legendary talent as Al Green, Al Jarreau, Ray Charles, the
Neville Brothers and the Crusaders. She has also performed at the Hollywood
Bowl's Tribute to Billie Holiday and participated in various commemorative
concerts honoring the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. These performances have
wowed audiences and earned press accolades throughout the world.
Wright will be on tour in the United States through the end of the year.
