When McGrath arrives at the Vatican she is greeted by a mysteriously engaging figure by the name of Cardinal Donatello who trains Vatican priests in the process of Exorcism. Much to her dismay, the heroine sees the link in all the priest's deaths - they've all been engaged in exorcists. To that end, McGrath is shocked to meet a priest who is possessed by an evil spirit. Now realizing that the story is bigger than the deaths of the priests McGrath understands that a major battle is being waged against good and evil at the Vatican and is persuaded by the Cardinal to allow the Vatican authorities to handle the disturbance. Shocked by what she sees and feels the detective persuades her boss to allow her to return to Dublin. Before her return however, another priest will die and she will be summoned to New York.
