SUNNYVALE, Calif., Dec. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- For consumers who want to enjoy
their digital movies, photos, music and online activities from the comfort of
their couch without the need to run cables from the home office to the living
room, Actiontec Electronics today announced the Actiontec Wireless Digital
Media Player - a VCR-sized appliance that wirelessly links PCs to home
entertainment centers for a bigger and better media experience.
With this $199 device, high-tech enthusiasts can display digital home
movies and snapshots directly on their TV, listen to MP3 files and Internet
radio on the family stereo, and surf the Internet using the television as
their monitor, thereby taking advantage of the biggest screen and best sound
system in the house.
Result? Friends and family no longer need to crowd around your computer
screen to view still or video pictures from your trip to the Grand Canyon or
the Grand Caymans. Digital camcorder footage does not need to be converted to
videotape to show it on your TV. The digital music on your PC can be played
in the family room without burning it onto CDs. And Led Zeppelin or Limp
Bizkit need no longer be a prisoner of your minuscule computer speakers.
Setup is a simple matter of connecting the TV and stereo to the Actiontec
player with the cables provided, inserting the 11 Mbps wireless PC card
included in the package into the media player's PC card slot, and following
the configuration instructions on the Actiontec Installation Buddy(R) CD-ROM.
The Actiontec player will then communicate wirelessly with any PC equipped
with an 802.11b or 802.11g wireless adapter, even if the computer is in
Various menus, including a utility that extracts music and images from the
user's computer, can be navigated on the TV screen with a special remote
control included in the package. The system also allows databases from
multiple home computers to be merged, making it possible to aggregate the
digital media libraries of different family members.
"This product is on the cutting edge of the convergence movement that is
beginning to bridge the gap between computers and consumer entertainment,"
said Dean Chang, President and CEO of Actiontec Electronics. "By combining
the convenience of wireless operation with advanced functionality such as the
ability to handle digital video and Web surfing, our Wireless Digital Media
Player is making it easier than ever to bring the power of the PC into the
center of activity in the home."
