SUNNYVALE, Calif., Aug. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Actiontec Electronics today introduced Kid Defender 1.1, a new version of the company's Internet monitoring software that gives parents the ability to supervise their children's Internet activity from anywhere in the world. Available now, the program's new instant message capabilities allow parents -- who may be at work or on another computer -- to communicate with their children as they are surfing the net. Using Kid Defender 1.1, parents can hold a real-time conversation with their children to offer advice, answer questions or discuss specific Web sites or chat threads. Parents using Kid Defender 1.1 can monitor online activity from home, office, or anywhere they have a computer and an Internet connection. Installed on both the parent's and the child's PC, Kid Defender 1.1 helps parents shield their children from inappropriate websites or potentially dangerous strangers they may meet in chat rooms. The program enables parents to observe their children's website visits, instant message conversations and chat room sessions in real time -- then cut off threatening correspondents or objectionable URLs with a single mouse click. "Real-time monitoring capabilities are the best safeguard parents can implement for children using the Internet," said Dean Chang, President and CEO of Actiontec Electronics. "When parents cannot supervise their children's activities in person, Kid Defender 1.1 offers them peace of mind. Parents can now give their children immediate feedback while they are online, guiding their choices and helping them make better decisions through interactive discussion." Kid Defender 1.1 also offers conventional parental controls such as a recommended website blacklist, the ability to add or delete blocked sites as well as create a list of blocked instant message addresses, and the option to permit access only to a specific "white list" of websites and users. Kid Defender 1.1 allows parents to track web surfing as well as chat, AIM, MSN, Yahoo and ICQ instant messaging sessions on a real-time basis. When a parent chooses to terminate an instant message conversation or close access to a website, Kid Defender 1.1 automatically adds the offending screen name or URL to the program's Blocked list. The program also gives parents the ability to: -- Minimize the amount of real-time monitoring required by electing not to display activity from trusted websites (such as Nickelodeon.com) and trusted instant message users (such as relatives or good friends). -- Monitor two or more children's activities, simultaneously, from a single screen. -- Set different rules for each child by customizing blocked websites and blocked user screen names for each computer. -- Save each day's online activities. -- Prevent children from bypassing the program by invoking password protection that will bar them from accessing and changing the program settings. -- Update the software online by logging on to www.kiddefender.com to download new versions and revised parental control lists. Specifications and Pricing Kid Defender 1.1 is available on CD for $39.95, including a one-year subscription for real-time monitoring with no separate software charge. It supports two parents and two children. Real-time monitoring licenses for additional children cost $9.95 per child per year. Subscription extensions for the boxed version are $39.95 per year. Minimum system requirements include one 90 MHz computer with Internet access; 15 MB hard drive space; 64 MB RAM; a CD-ROM drive; and Windows 98, 98SE, ME, 2000 or XP. Available hard disk space of 1 GB is required to use the activity logging feature.
