CHILLICOTHE, Ohio, Oct. 6, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- A growing number of people in Washington Court House know Dr. Michael Beyer as the new family medicine physician in town. But when not attending to the needs of patients in his Adena Health System office, he's president of the 20th Century Society USA.
The non-profit society brings together people from across the U.S. and around the world who have a special interest in the art, architecture and design of the 20th century.
"I've always been interested in historic buildings, but my interest was really sparked while going to college and medical school in Chicago," said the personable Dr. Beyer, who graduated from the Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine.
As a young volunteer guide for the Chicago Architecture Foundation, he had an incredible opportunity to appreciate the architecture of the Windy City. That, in turn, piqued his interest in 20th century design, which includes Art Nouveau, Art Deco, Art Moderne and Midcentury, as well as the Arts & Crafts movement.
"My favorite period is Art Deco. I like the stylized design, geometric shapes, streamlining, and oftentimes 'futuristic' look," Dr. Beyer said.
"Since moving to central Ohio, I've discovered a number of Art Deco treasures, including the Markay Theater in Jackson and the LeVeque Tower and Ohio Judicial Center in Columbus.
"Meanwhile, the theater in the old Washington Middle School, in Washington Court House, is both very Art Deco and Art Moderne."
The physician and art historian said he also is intrigued by Frank Lloyd Wright's works in Springfield, OH, which is home to the Westcott House.
"Actually, I was blown away by the historic district in Springfield -- a long street of grand old houses representing every architectural style from around 1860 through the 1920s."
The 20th Century Society USA, which last year moved its headquarters from North Carolina to Ohio, includes members from 11 different states and four foreign countries. Members toured Cleveland in 2006, Chicago in 2008 and San Francisco in 2010. The society will be touring Miami in January 2012.
"The tours highlight architecture of the 20th century, especially Art Deco and Art Moderne, but also include other cultural attractions, like botanical gardens, museums and artist's studios," Dr. Beyer said.
Earlier this year, Dr. Beyer was in Rio de Janerio for a meeting of the International Coalition of Art Deco Societies (ICADS), which represents about 30 Art Deco organizations from around the world.
On behalf of the 20th Century Society, he nominated Cleveland to host a World Congress on Art Deco. ICADS delegates, in turn, agreed to hold a World Congress there, in 2017.
When not practicing medicine and serving as society president, Dr. Beyer is searching for a home in Washington Court House – a historic home of course, with a touch of Art Deco.
