STAMFORD, Conn., April 19 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Jim Himes,
affordable housing executive and community leader, announced the formation
of his campaign committee to run for the United States House of
Representatives against Republican Representative Chris Shays (CT-04).
Himes, a Democrat, filed the papers with the Federal Election Commission
yesterday to take on Shays, who narrowly won reelection last fall.
"For too long, Chris Shays has been single-mindedly focused on
promoting President Bush's failed policy on the war in Iraq and has grown
out of touch with the hard-working families in our community," said Himes.
"I am running for Congress to right his wrongs and take our community and
our country in a new direction.
"It's time we start to bring our troops home from Iraq, promote strong
national security, responsibly reform our healthcare system and ensure that
our children have access to a first rate education," continued Himes. "We
deserve a leader in Washington who will fight for our values all of the
time, not just during the campaign season."
Shays is one of only eight Republicans across the country representing
a district that John Kerry won in the 2004 Presidential election, and
Democrats plan to defeat Shays this cycle.
"I am pleased that we have a Democratic candidate who intends to
challenge Chris Shays, as Shays continues to waffle on the war and follow
the failed policies of President Bush," said Nancy DiNardo, Democratic
State Party Chairwoman.
"It's great to see a challenger with Jim's stature enter the race for
Congress, 2008," said Ellen Camhi, Democratic National Committee Member and
Chair of the Stamford Democratic City Committee. "Jim's leadership in
Greenwich, as Chair of the DTC, has reinvigorated the Greenwich Democrats,
as I'm sure he will invigorate Democrats across the District."
"I am very excited at the prospect of Jim running for Congress from the
4th CD," said Maximino Medina, Jr., Vice-President of the Bridgeport Board
of Education. "Jim's values and priorities would make him an excellent
representative. His service to Aspira of Connecticut, Inc. a non-profit
educational organization in Bridgeport whose mission is to inspire Latino
students to excel academically, demonstrates his commitment to public
education and our community's youth."
Himes, 40, lives in Cos Cob with his wife Mary and two daughters, Emma
(7) and Linley (4). He is a Vice President of Enterprise Community
Partners, the nation's leading producer of affordable housing. Prior to
joining Enterprise, Himes was a banker at Goldman, Sachs & Co., where he
worked in Corporate Finance, Mergers & Acquisitions and High Technology.
Himes is an elected member of the Greenwich Board of Estimate and
Taxation, a member of the Board of the Fairfield County Community
Foundation, an Elder at the First Presbyterian Church of Greenwich and
Chairman of the Greenwich Democratic Town Committee. He previously served
as Chairman of the Board of the Greenwich Housing Authority, of Aspira of
Connecticut, and as a member of the Board of Family Assets, LLC.
Born and raised in Latin America, Himes graduated from Harvard College
and studied at Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar.
Jim will interact with voters in the 4th District live online at a
local community blog at 1:30 PM on Thursday, April 19. Details can be found
on the home page of the campaign web site at www.HimesforCongress.com.
In the coming weeks, Himes will formally launch his campaign in a
series of events throughout the District.
