AFSCME Announces Endorsement for Reelection of Senator Arlen Specter
HARRISBURG, Pa., July 20 /PRNewswire/ -- The largest Pennsylvania AFL-CIO
union, Council 13 AFSCME, today announced its endorsement of the reelection of
U.S. Senator Arlen Specter (R-PA). AFSCME represents approximately 76,000
public employees and health care workers in Pennsylvania, including some
56,000 state employees.
"Sen. Specter has a proven track record of advocating on behalf of
workers," said Council 13 AFSCME Executive Director, Edward J. Keller. "He
has consistently supported Pennsylvania's workers throughout his three terms
as Senator."
Keller said that Sen. Specter is on the workers' side of important issues
like the comp time bill and minimum wage increases. Specter joins with labor
in his opposition of right-to-work, and striker replacement legislation. He
opposes major cuts in Social Security and Medicare, and supports funding for
education. "It is this evidence of his commitment to decency, equity and
fairness to workers which led us to this endorsement," said Keller.
AFSCME's political endorsements are made by its Statewide Political Action
Steering Committee, whose members, Keller said, "represent the sentiments of
the decisive majority of AFSCME members."
