AIAM Praises Start of Cash for Clunkers Program
ARLINGTON, Va., July 24 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Association of International Automobile Manufacturers, Inc. (AIAM) released the following remarks by Michael J. Stanton, President and CEO, on the first day of the U.S. government's "Car Allowance Rebate Program" (CARS), also known as "cash for clunkers."
"Today marks a great opportunity for American consumers to replace gas-guzzling vehicles with newer, safer, cleaner cars and light trucks, thanks to the 'cash for clunkers' program.
"AIAM worked closely with Congress and other stakeholders in support of a fleet renewal program from the beginning of its gestation, so we're especially pleased to see an effort launched that helps build a stronger economy during today's challenging times while reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
"It is important to note that Congress asked the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to create this program from scratch in a very limited period of time. Many said it couldn't be done so quickly, yet NHTSA succeeded in meeting an ambitious deadline. We want to convey our appreciation to those at NHTSA and the Department of Transportation (DOT) who worked so hard to put this program together."
