NEW YORK, March 4, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- AJC applauded Vice President Biden's speech today at the AIPAC Policy Conference.
The Vice President stressed the Administration's "deep commitment to the security of Israel." He pledged that America would help maintain the Jewish state's qualitative military superiority in the face of immense regional challenges, such as those emanating from Iran.
"It was of critical importance that the Vice President reaffirmed the Obama Administration's position that 'containment' of the Iranian nuclear threat is not an option—and that when the President says 'all options on the table' regarding Iran, he is 'not bluffing,'" said AJC Executive Director David Harris. "We also took particular note of his call on the European Union to list Iranian-backed Hezbollah as the terrorist organization it is."
"Vice President Biden's passionate, life-long and very personal commitment to the well-being of Israel, and to the struggle against anti-Semitism, was very much on display in today's remarks," Harris added.
Citing the close military and intelligence cooperation between Israel and the U.S., including in the realm of missile defense, the Vice President noted numerous occasions at the United Nations and in its specialized agencies when America stood as a "bulwark" in opposition to the delegitimization of Israel, which he referred to as a pernicious threat to Israel's very existence.
He said that President Obama, on his upcoming visit to Israel, will pursue the vision of a two-state solution in which Jewish and Palestinian states live side-by-side in peace, a vision AJC has long shared, while also seeking to highlight Israel's remarkable contributions to the world.
