Albany Law School Ranked 12th Nationally for Percentage of Female Tenured Professors

ALBANY, N.Y., April 22 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Albany Law School is ranked among the top 12 doctoral universities with the largest share of female tenured professors, according to the March 2009 issue of the magazine Diverse: Issues in Higher Education. The list is based on a report by the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) that considered more than 1,400 U.S. colleges and universities, including 221 doctoral-granting institutions.

With female tenured professors making up 38 percent of the faculty, Albany Law School significantly exceeds the national average of 26 percent at doctoral-granting institutions. The AAUP study found that women are being hired in higher numbers into positions that do not lead to tenure, which limits the possibility of promotion and salary increase.

"We have always valued a diverse faculty to produce diverse scholarship and reflect a diverse student population," said President and Dean Thomas F. Guernsey. "Our established endowed professorship, the Kate Stoneman Chair in Law and Democracy, named for our 1898 alumna, the first woman lawyer in New York state, is one indication of our commitment to increasing the presence of women in the legal field."
