CHICAGO, Nov. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- During Prematurity Awareness Month, the March of Dimes is bringing attention to its recommendation that all women, especially those who are pregnant or looking to become pregnant, get the recommended dosage of folic acid in their daily diets. Through Chef Eric Paul's recipes and cooking demonstrations at two JEWEL-OSCO stores, the March of Dimes intends to educate women and their families in a fun and delicious way.

"I am extremely excited to introduce my new recipes for the March of Dimes, and to prepare samples for the public to try at two of JEWEL-OSCO's eco-friendly locations," said Chef Eric Paul. "I'd like to invite everyone to come out and watch me prepare a couple of meals, as we help educate the public on the importance of folate in women's diets."

The cooking demonstrations are open to the public and women who are pregnant or hope to someday become pregnant are encouraged to attend. They can learn more about the March of Dimes, sample Chef Eric Paul's meals, receive five recipes and learn about the importance of folic acid.

"We are pleased to partner with Chef Eric Paul, to show how easy and delicious it can be to eat a balanced diet with a variety of nutrients that are critical for good health for both men and women. This is especially important for women who are already expecting or are planning to become pregnant," said Kim Kirchherr, MS, RD, LDN, CDE, JEWEL-OSCO Dietitian.

The recommended dose of folic acid for most women is 400 micrograms per day, and for pregnant women, it is at least 600 micrograms per day. Folate or folic acid is a B vitamin that can help prevent certain birth defects of the brain and spinal cord called neural tube defects (NTDs). The most common NTDs are Spina Bifida and anencephaly. In the United States today, about 2,200 babies are born each year with a neural tube defect.

Women can get the necessary amount of folate/folic acid by consuming foods that provide this essential nutrient. Many cereals and grain products in the United States have been enriched with folic acid. Enriched flour, rice, pasta, bread and cereals are examples of grain products that may have had folic acid added (check the label for the full nutrient profile of every product). Folate-rich foods include, but are not limited to, leafy green vegetables, dried beans, legumes, oranges and orange juice. Folic acid in supplement form is also recommended.
