American Academy of Physician Assistants Hosts Blog Party on Oct. 7 to Highlight Importance of Prevention

WASHINGTON, Oct. 5, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- PA Pro Now, the official blog of the American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA), is hosting a PA Week Blog Party to emphasize the importance of preventive care, including regular health screenings and check-ups. The blog party will be held on Oct. 7 as physician assistants who are playing the role of "Prevention Ambassadors" in their effort to focus on preventing illness and disease celebrate PA Week around the country.

According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), chronic disease is responsible for more than 70 percent of all deaths in the U.S., totaling approximately 1.7 million each year. Most of these deaths are preventable. According to the National Prevention, Health Promotion, and Public Health Council, half of Americans do not receive the preventive care they need to live a healthy life. Preventive care can avoid or better manage chronic illnesses, such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, HIV, asthma and cancer, which are costly for patients and health care providers when treating them after they occur.

Physician assistants, with a generalist medical education, are in a unique position to deliver clinical preventive services to patients – regardless of the PA's specialty.

"So many chronic diseases are preventable and routine, age-appropriate preventive care combined with ongoing communication between patients and their health care providers is the key to maintaining long-term health and wellness," said AAPA President Robert Wooten, PA-C. "By focusing our online conversation on prevention, we want to empower patients to take charge of their overall well-being, and as their health care provider, improve both the length and quality of their lives."

This year, AAPA is excited to be working with a variety of like-minded health care organizations and provider groups, such as the American Cancer Society in its effort during October (National Breast Cancer Awareness Month) to optimize health delivery options, while reducing the risk of illness, injury and premature death.

Bloggers who write about health and wellness, disease prevention, health care, fitness and parenting are invited to offer resources and personal experiences and voice their support for preventive care on Oct. 7. By taking part in the prevention, bloggers will be able to share ideas, provide suggestions, gain alternative perspectives and engage with an online community of individuals with a common interest in preventive care and encourage their readers to live a healthy life.

Bloggers who wish to participate in PA Week Blog Party are invited to visit www.aapa.org/news_and_publications/pa_pro_now.aspx and download an official badge to post on their website, share links to their posts on the AAPA Facebook page (www.facebook.com/aapa.org) and tweet the link with the #PAWeek hashtag.

PA Week is observed each year October 6–12 by the PA profession. The week celebrates the significant impact PAs make in health care and the tremendous growth of the profession by saluting outstanding PAs and highlighting their work.
