DALLAS, Jan. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- The American Heart Association recently
announced a new national sponsor of its American Heart Walk -- Subway
Restaurants. As a national sponsor beginning January 2002, Subway will
communicate heart-healthy messages on nutrition and exercise that are
consistent with the American Heart Association's dietary guidelines.
Subway also will be actively involved in numerous American Heart Walk
events across the country. Subway will conduct in-restaurant promotions,
provide sandwiches to participants at many of the Walks and place national and
local advertising promoting the American Heart Walk.
"We are pleased to have Subway as a national sponsor of the American Heart
Walk because they will help to educate consumers about how to eat a heart-
healthy diet and get fit," said Riska Platt, the American Heart Association's
national spokesperson on nutrition.
"The American Heart Walk is a natural tie-in to our healthy, active
lifestyle brand positioning," added Chris Carroll, marketing director of the
Subway Franchisee Advertising Fund Trust. "We are proud to support an event
that has such a positive impact on the community."
The American Heart Walk is the premier fund-raising event for the American
Heart Association that emphasizes physical activity and proper nutrition for a
heart-healthy lifestyle. This year the goal is to raise $75 million in FY
2002 for cardiovascular disease and stroke research, as well as community and
professional educational programs. Over 650,000 walkers will participate in
more than 750 events nationally in the coming year.
At many American Heart Walks across the country, participants may see
Jared Fogle, Subway's "weight-loss hero," walking beside them. Jared has
maintained his weight loss for three years through a heart-healthy, well-
balanced diet and exercise plan. "As an active walker, I encourage everyone
to participate in their local American Heart Walk for the heart-health benefit
and to support the American Heart Association," said Jared Fogle.
The American Heart Association spent about $382 million during fiscal year
2000-2001 on research support, public and professional education, and
community programs. Nationwide, the organization has grown to include more
than 22.5 million volunteers and supporters who carry out its mission in
communities across the country. The association is the largest nonprofit
voluntary health organization fighting heart disease, stroke and other
cardiovascular diseases, which annually kill about 960,000 Americans.
