PALATINE, Ill., Oct. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Medium-voltage metal-clad
switchgear used in mission-critical power applications can be protected from
damaging open arcing faults with the new Arc Terminator(TM) device from Square
D. The device controls and directs arc current, extinguishing arcs within 4
ms -- less than 1/4 of a cycle -- to minimize equipment damage and reduce
The Arc Terminator reduces the effects of an arcing fault at the point of
initiation. A fast-acting closing switch extinguishes the open burning arc
and prevents the buildup of high internal pressures. Therefore the energy
that can be released is significantly reduced, protecting equipment.
If the Arc Terminator detects an arc, an electronic control unit initiates
the closing of a high-speed vacuum switch. The electronic control requires
two sensing inputs: (1) Optical sensors to detect arcing faults and (2)
current sensors to detect any changes in the current waveform. These two
inputs must occur simultaneously to cause the unit to operate.
An indicator on the junction box (which serves as a collector for the
optical inputs), points to the compartment where the arcing fault occurred,
making it easy for maintenance personnel to pinpoint the location of a fault
and repair the problem quickly. Once the cause of the fault has been fixed,
the system is ready to be reset and returned to normal operation. For
critical applications such as petrochemical and large Internet data centers,
this means less downtime.
The device is shipped completely wired at the factory and designed for
easy operation in the field. Multiple switchgear sections can be connected on
each side of an Arc Terminator section. No settings or other calculations are
required during switchgear installation. The normal switchgear protective
relaying functions are not changed by the addition of the Arc Terminator.
