ARCADIS Wins Major Project Management Contract in Oman
AMSTERDAM, April 17 /PRNewswire/ -- ARCADIS (EURONEXT: ARCAD), the
international design, consulting, engineering and management services
company, today announced that it has won a major contract to provide project
management services to the Brazilian mining company Vale (Companhia Vale do
Rio Doce) for a large project in Sohar, Oman. The contract will be executed
through a joint venture (on a 50/50 basis) with a local partner, W.J. Towell
& Co. The contract totals approximately US$ 24 million. Further financial
details regarding the contract were not disclosed.
ARCADIS and Towell will support the Vale team with its US$ 1.4 billion
implementation program for a massive industrial venture at the Port of Sohar
- The Vale Oman Industrial Complex. Located in Northern Oman, the complex
comprises a port terminal for large vessels (400,000 tons), a distribution
center for up to 40 million ton per year of iron ore and pellets piles, and a
pelletizing plant with a total capacity of 9 million tons per year. The
pellet plant and the distribution center are scheduled to start operations
during the last quarter of 2010. The project cornerstone was laid early March
2009, in a ceremony attended by a large number of high-ranking officials
representing the Omani government, Vale, Sohar Industrial Port Company (SIPC)
and other organizations involved in the development of this giant project,
including ARCADIS.
ARCADIS Logos (ARCADIS' Brazilian subsidiary) has been supporting Vale
with the implementation of their infrastructure projects in Brazil since the
early 80's. Manoel Antonio da Silva, Managing Director of ARCADIS Logos says:
"ARCADIS world class experience with project management in infrastructure and
our more than 25 years of successful partnership with Vale were the main
reasons for ARCADIS to be selected. We are proud to be part of such a
relevant project that will position Oman as a pellet distribution hub serving
steel plants in the Middle East, Northern Africa and the Indian
sub-continent."
