Argus Honors RJ Corman, Rosebud Mining with prestigious Win-Win Award
HOUSTON, May 30, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Global energy and commodity price reporting agency Argus has named RJ Corman and Rosebud Mining as the 2013 winners of its prestigious Win-Win Award.
The companies received their award today at the North American Rail Shippers Association conference in Baltimore, which was attended by almost 300 representatives of railroads and their customers.
The annual honor is given to railroads, shippers and organizations that develop innovative partnerships leading to improved service, efficiency and other mutually beneficial service improvements.
Launched in 1998 by Argus Rail Business, the annual award is now in its 16th year and celebrates partnerships between rail carriers and customers resulting in significant cost or service benefits. The latest award recognizes how both companies came together and enhanced their business through an innovative solution that allows the shipper to increase production and bring additional business to the railroad.
"I am pleased to recognize Rosebud Mining and RJ Corman on their innovative partnership that allows both parties to increase business," Argus Media chairman and chief executive Adrian Binks said. "Argus is proud to be at the forefront of making sure these partnerships get the recognition they deserve for the last 16 years."
Rosebud's coal was previously trucked form the mine to the wash plant, missing RJ Corman's shortline railroad until it moved from the wash plant to an interchange with Norfolk Southern.
The new 58-mile haul from the mine to the wash plant occurs three times a week with 60-railcar unit trains, which are emptied by Corman at the plant to assist Rosebud in offloading the railcars so that the coal can be processed. Rosebud produces mainly metallurgical coal that has held up better than its thermal counterpart in global markets, making the additional production instantly accretive to Rosebud.
"The biggest benefit it provided was allowing the trucks to be diverted to be used at other mines that do not have rail service," Rosebud general manager of rail logistics Jerry Nassar said.
This relocation of trucks from rural Pennsylvania roads to other mines in the company's portfolio allowed Rosebud to increase production by adding capacity at the non-rail served sites, even as other companies were cutting eastern coal production in the face of a declining market. It also generated coal business for RJ Corman that was previously trucked from the mine to the wash plant, bypassing the shortline despite the presence of rail service at the mine. The rail solution eliminated complaints from residents about coal dust and coal trucks driving through their communities along the highways leading from the mine to the wash plant.
The shortline recognized that the coal producer needed access to enough railcars to ratably move 18,000 short tons of coal each week from its mine to the wash plant. The coal volumes equal 180 railcars that would need to be provided regularly to the producer to ensure that both its mine and wash plant operate efficiently and do not have to wait for coal supply from the mine.
"We are really excited to win the Win-Win award," RJ Corman assistant vice-president sales and marketing Bill Henderson said. "We are so proud that when someone presents us with a problem that we are able to sit down and develop a solution that meets the customer's needs and does it in a profitable way for both companies."
