Aspen Aerogels Opens New R&D Lab to Meet Increased Demand for Energy Conservation

Nanotechnology-Enabled Insulation in High Demand

Sep 22, 2005, 01:00 ET from Aspen Aerogels, Inc.

NORTHBOROUGH, Mass., Sept. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Aspen Aerogels, Inc.
announced today that it has opened its new research and development lab at its
headquarters in Northborough, MA. The 10,000 square foot lab facility is
focused on delivering more of the world's best insulation performance in a
ready-to-use blanket format, a patented nanotechnology developed by Aspen. The
company reports a marked increase in the demand for its nanoporous insulation
because it insulates 2 to 8 times better than existing materials.

"Our aerogel blankets are already widely used in subsea tie-back pipelines
due to the ability of our product to deliver outstanding thermal management
within very limited space. This has resulted in millions of dollars of
savings in steel costs for our customers," said Marc Lebel, Aspen's vice
president of sales and marketing. "These new labs will greatly accelerate the
speed at which we will be able to deliver application solutions for a wide
range of markets, including, the building and construction, automotive and
fuel cell industries." Aspen is also focused on the fast growing Liquid
Natural Gas (LNG) markets. "We will save hundreds of millions for LNG ships,
storage and production facilities over the next five years. LNG is stored at
-165 Celsius. Keeping the product at this temperature is a major thermal
management challenge which requires a product with outstanding insulating
properties. This is where we come in. By using our products, our customers
have reported a 38% reduction in LNG boil off rate versus competitive
products. This reduction translates directly into a bottom line savings of
 millions of dollars."
The labs feature state of the art chemistry wet labs, as well as labs
focused on analysis, supercritical fluids processing, process development,
prototyping and testing. "A great deal of what we will do is measure the
performance of current and new insulation products for a range of thermal and
acoustic applications for many industries -- that includes automotive and fuel
cells as well as building and construction, military and aerospace," said
George Gould, R&D director for Aspen.
