AVL's "Made in Michigan" Expo Showcases the State's Finest
PLYMOUTH, Mich., Oct.22, 2012 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- AVL hosted 19 Michigan vendors during its first annual "Made in Michigan" expo last Friday at its North American headquarters in Plymouth, Michigan. Joyce Weishaar, AVL Americas Director of Human Resources, explained the purpose behind the powertrain testing and engineering leader's actions. "We believe in giving something back to the communities in which we work," she said. "This expo gave us a chance to educate our employees about the wide diversity of products and services from local vendors in a way that was both fun and engaging."
The expo was organized by AVL's Human Resources team. It was open to AVL employees and their friends and families and – by all accounts – was a huge success. "The great thing about an activity like this," said Don Manvel, Chairman and CEO of AVL Americas, "is the sense of pride it brings out in everyone involved, vendors and employees alike." Manvel added that the event was also "a good reminder of the large base of local talent and innovation that surrounds us beyond the automotive industry."
According to Weishaar, the 19 vendors featured a wide array of products, from custom-designed leather handbags to Michigan-made gifts, novelties and food. A local orchard supplied fresh cider and donuts to add to the festive nature of the event.
The hope is to expand the AVL "Made in Michigan" expo in the years to come. "Everyone's so busy today rushing to and from work," said Weishaar, "that we often don't really notice all the fantastic products and services right in our own backyard. This expo gave us all a chance to stop and smell the roses." Or, as one of Weishaar's team members more accurately pointed out, the scented candles – made, of course, in Michigan and on display at AVL.
