Jensen, creative principal and founder of San Diego web design firm, Bop Design, stated, "Every year, we see a shift away from previous design trends and an influx of new approaches and formats that replace them. The web design industry is constantly changing and evolving. While a few trends stick around year after year, far more trends fall by the wayside as they are replaced because of poor functionality by newer technology or design ideologies."
According to Jensen, there are 7 major web design trends that are slowly fading away in the professional design industry. She states that the number one design trend that the industry is shifting away from is skeumorphic design. Skeumorphic design creates a 3-D effect on the computer or smartphone screen by using tools like shadows, highlights, etc. "Skeumorphic design was intended to provide a great user experience, but it's outlived its usefulness and now just adds clutter to an interface and isn't scalable," said Jensen.
Bad stock photography is another trend that Jensen claims is dying out in the web design industry. She states the trend is dying out because of sheer competition in the stock photography space. "Photographers are beginning to shoot pictures with web design basics in mind, allowing for web copy and better overall balance," she asserted. "With the advent of good stock photography, bad stock photography on websites is quickly diminishing."
Another trend in web design that Jensen is glad to see disappear in 2015 is a cluttered website. "Cluttered websites that try to convey too much information end up creating a terrible experience for the end user. Professionals websites, especially B2B websites, are trending away from clutter and focusing more on minimalism," according to the creative principal. "It's difficult to craft a strong brand identity in a web design when there is so much going on with the design. Simple, clean, minimalistic design is really the future of web design."
Other web design trends that lost popularity in 2015, according to Jensen, are autoplay media, a focus on above the fold design, designing for desktop viewing only, and designing in a silo. Jensen stated that the main shift in web design that is causing these trends to be replaced is a strong focus on the customer experience (CX) or user experience (UX).
"When we work with clients on designing a new website, our focus is always on the end user and how they are going to be using the website. Designing a website for the company is not the right approach, rather, it should be build for the potential and existing customers. Without them, a company won't succeed anyway," stated Jensen.
