Dr. Denise Elliott to help guide veterinary protocols and standards in the field of nutrition

PORTLAND, Ore., Nov. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Banfield, The Pet Hospital® today announced Denise Elliott, BVSc (Hons), PhD, Dipl. ACVIM, Dipl. ACVN, as its medical specialist/nutritionist. With nearly 20 years experience in veterinary medicine, Dr. Elliott is uniquely qualified to help build a platform that will position Banfield as a leader in veterinary nutrition for general practice.

Dr. Elliott will serve as part of the Medical Quality Advancement team at Banfield's main campus in Portland, Ore., where she will lead nutrition counseling for doctors and paraprofessionals as well as develop nutritional continuing education programs. This new position serves as a joint partnership between Banfield and Royal Canin, in an effort to help Banfield's clients understand the role nutrition plays in the overall health and wellness of Pets. From 2004 until 2009, Dr. Elliott served as the director of scientific affairs, Royal Canin USA, and most recently, as health and nutritional sciences director for the Americas for Royal Canin SAS in France.

"Dr. Elliott's role will help further Banfield's commitment to medical quality, specifically in the area of nutrition," said Karen K. Faunt, DVM, MS, Dipl. ACVIM (Small Animal), Banfield's vice president of medical quality advancement. Board certified in both internal medicine and veterinary nutrition, Dr. Elliott has a deep working knowledge of Banfield--she has been an instrumental partner of the practice for the past nine years by providing continuing education to doctors as well as nutritional input to the Banfield Formulary committee which determines formulary items such as pharmaceuticals and biologics for more than 750 hospitals.

Dr. Elliott graduated from the University of Melbourne with a bachelor's degree in veterinary science with honors in 1991. After completing an internship in small animal medicine and surgery at the University of Pennsylvania, she moved to the University of California-Davis where she completed a residency in small animal medicine, a fellowship in renal medicine and hemodialysis, and a residency in small animal clinical nutrition. Dr. Elliott received board certification with the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine in 1996 and with the American College of Veterinary Nutrition in 2001. The University of California-Davis awarded her a PhD in nutrition in 2001 for her work on multifrequency bioelectrical impedance analysis in healthy cats and dogs.
