WILMINGTON, Del., Oct. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- As part of its ongoing commitment to empowering its customers and communities, Barclays will host 800 local Delaware students from the Thomas Edison Charter and East Side Charter School as part of its Community Service Volunteers Make A Difference Day. This announcement is significant because it underscores the level of involvement Barclays has with the community. Last year, as part of its international Make A Difference Day program, 11,700 Barclays employees in 25 countries completed 900 community service projects, with international participation up by 70%. This year, Barclays employees in the United Kingdom, France, India, Zambia, Tanzania, United States, Mauritius, Germany, Portugal and a number of countries across Asia will participate in additional community service efforts. In Delaware, Barclays employees will personally meet with the students to teach them money and savings skills and offer a glimpse into the world of working for large professional organizations such as Barclays. "Every year, thousands of employees worldwide come together to volunteer for Make A Difference Day. At Barclays we are grateful for the opportunity to align with our local communities," said Lloyd M. Wirshba, CEO of Barclays U.S. credit card business. "Our employees are leaders in the community giving generously of their time and skills to make a positive difference." A large part of the company's corporate mission is to raise the quality of life of its constituents through dedication to charities and community organizations. Make A Difference Day is just one of the many charitable events that Barclays supports. Currently, the Barclaycard USA Cycle Challenge includes eight Barclaycard US and UK employees who have embarked on a seven-week, 3,250-mile cross-country bicycle ride to raise more than $250,000 for six American, British and international charities. And as the holidays approach, Barclays will partner with the West End Neighborhood House for its Life Lines holiday program. Three days before Christmas, Barclays will host a special holiday party for 45 local Wilmington teens, where each of them will receive gifts valued at $200. This is an especially important initiative because this underserved group rarely experiences the true spirit of giving during the holidays. Barclays gives each employee four hours a month to volunteer in community charities of their choice. Activities that volunteers have organized include: teaching children how to manage their money; designing and running seminars; career advice and interview workshops; reclaiming green spaces; mentoring and befriending those in need; building school classrooms; one-to-one business consultancy session and creating sensory gardens.
