Bay Alarm Medical Joins The Fight To End Hunger Home medical alert company to partner with FeedingAmerica.org
CONCORD, Calif., Oct. 31, 2013 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- Bay Alarm Medical announced today that it will donate a portion of the company's proceeds during November and December to Feeding America, a nationwide network of more than 200 food banks that leads the fight against hunger in the United States. In 2012, almost 50 million households were "food insecure," a condition the USDA describes has having lack of access to quality food or shortage of food in the household. Seniors are particularly at risk for food insecurity because they're more likely than the general population to have fixed incomes and lack of access to transportation.
Each year, Feeding America helps feed 37 million people through 61,000 food pantries, soup kitchens, and shelters in communities across America. In addition, the organization works to educate the public about the causes of hunger in America and demographic trends that may make the problem worse. As the Baby Boom generation ages, the population of food insecure seniors could increase as much as 50% by the year 2025.
"The very young and elderly in this country are disproportionally affected by hunger," explains marketing manager, Alan Wu. "Three quarters of households that receive federal food assistance contain a child, a senior, or someone with a disability."
Bay Alarm Medical is a leading supplier of home medical alert monitoring services; its client base contains many seniors and people with disabilities who live on fixed incomes. "Feeding America serves over 3 million seniors every year. This partnership is a natural extension of the concern we all have for the safety and security of our clients," Wu says.
In a recent blog post, Wu listed five ways individuals can help educate others about the problem of senior hunger. His recommendations include: starting a community food drive, donating to Feeding America, volunteer to help local anti-hunger efforts, be alert to signs of food insecurity in a household, and spread the word through personal contact and social media.
"Wouldn't you do everything in your power to protect your parent or grandparent from hunger?" asked Wu. "We would. That's why Bay Alarm Medical is partnering with Feeding America during the holiday season."
