Behind the Iron Curtain: American Professor Shares Experiences in Land of the Former Soviet Union
NAMPA, Idaho, Nov. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- In this combination memoir/travel narrative, "In Post-Communist Worlds" (published by iUniverse), Dr. Martin Scheffer provides cultural and historical accounts of a four-year-long grand adventure behind the Iron Curtain shortly after the dissolution of the Soviet Union, its Communist way of life and the end of its Cold War with America.
"This book was written to help inform, mainly the general reader, about what the world after Communism looked like, and to tell the story of an American educator's involvement in a grassroots effort to reform and democratize the Communist legacy of Soviet higher education," Scheffer said.
The sometimes serious, usually lighthearted, often humorous stories in this book are about this key period of time.
They are based on the personal experiences and professional observations of the author and his wife, who both resigned early from their educational positions in order to take advantage of the unique opportunity to work and travel throughout Estonia, Lithuania, Ukraine and Uzbekistan. Scheffer worked as a visiting professor while employed with the Civic Education Project (CEP), a small nonprofit "Peace Corps style" organization with a mission to assist in the development and reform of post-Soviet higher education in the social sciences.
