Blood Donors Still Needed During Spring Break, Easter

PITTSBURGH, March 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Central Blood Bank, which supplies
blood products to over 40 hospitals across the region, wants to ensure that
local blood supplies do not "go south" during the next two to three weeks.
Central Blood Bank needs to see an average of 700 donors every day just to
maintain an adequate inventory. "Holidays, school breaks -- these are always
challenging times for local blood and platelet collections," said Mark Lynch,
blood bank spokesperson. "During spring break and the Easter holiday,
personal schedules change and many people travel out of the area. This often
contributes to a downturn in blood and platelet donations. We're hoping to
 avoid that situation this year."
Lynch added that this year's unusually harsh cold and flu season has had
an impact on local blood collections. "Fewer 'loyal' blood donors have been
able to make their regular donations because they have been ill," said Lynch.
"For this reason we are counting on first-time donors, college students home
for the holidays, and others who haven't donated recently to roll up their
sleeves and help maintain area blood supplies."
Inventories of blood types O and B often fluctuate around the holidays.
Though donors of these types are in greatest demand, people do not need to
know their blood type to donate. Donations of all blood types are welcome and
needed. Platelets, a component of blood that helps blood to clot, are also
needed, as this product has a shelf-life of just five days. To donate blood
or platelets, individuals must be at least 17 years old; weigh at least 103
pounds (110 pounds for platelet donations) and be in generally good health.
There is no upper age limit and most medications are acceptable. Central
Blood Bank operates 20 donor centers in addition to mobile blood drives
scheduled throughout the region. Community members should call Central Blood
Bank at 1-800-310-9551 to learn about donation opportunities in their area.
Central Blood Bank is the non-profit organization providing blood products
and related transfusion services to over 40 hospitals in Allegheny, Armstrong,
Butler, Mercer, Washington and Westmoreland Counties in Pennsylvania as well
as selected communities in northern West Virginia and eastern Ohio. Seven
hundred registered donors are needed every 24 hours in order to meet regional
 demand.
