Blunt: 'Taxpayer Protections Must Remain in Place'
WASHINGTON, Jan. 4 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- House Republican Whip Roy
Blunt (Mo.) today issued the following statement regarding Republican
efforts to protect Americans against tax hikes in the new Congress:
"The rules designed to protect taxpayers against onerous, job-killing
tax increases must remain in place.
"Republicans will insist that sixty percent of the House vote in favor
of a tax hike before it can be implemented. Without this important rule, we
are all but insuring job-killing tax increases that will hurt families,
businesses, and the economy.
"Our goal in this new Congress is to work with the Democrat majority to
continue growing the economy, balance the budget, and keep taxes low for
American families. But with expensive new programs being proposed every
day, this protection against tax hikes has never been more important.
Without it, it will only take 218 of the 233 Democrats to pass a massive
tax increase."
As one of the first acts of their new majority, Republicans led the
effort in 1995 to implement taxpayer protections requiring a three-fifths
super majority to raise taxes.
House Republicans this afternoon will offer a motion to commit which
will prohibit the new Rules Committee from waiving the barrier against tax
increases.
