BMC Software Improves Productivity and Lowers Management Costs With Dynamic Linux Configuration Management Solution for IBM Mainframe

Deployment Manager for Linux for zSeries Simplifies Deployment of Hundreds

Of Heterogeneous Linux Servers

Sep 16, 2002, 01:00 ET from BMC Software, Inc.

HOUSTON, Sept. 16 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- BMC Software, Inc.
(NYSE: BMC), a leader in enterprise management, today announced Deployment
Manager for Linux for zSeries, a configuration management solution which
reduces costs, improves customer satisfaction and ensures maximum uptime and
performance by easily and dynamically deploying software for thousands of
heterogeneous Linux servers running in an IBM eServer zSeries environment. In
January, BMC Software announced Deployment Manager for Linux for the Intel
platform. Due to customer demand, BMC Software has extended Deployment
Manager for Linux to the eServer mainframe.
"We are currently evaluating Linux around its price/performance value, but
it can be difficult to manage and maintain -- especially if changes need to be
made or new applications need to be deployed across an extensive Linux
environment," said Dale Elmer, director, Technical Services Mainframe, Sprint.
"An automated deployment management solution should help us improve efficiency
and the productivity of our IT staff by automating the planning and deployment
process which will maximize our uptime and performance and ultimately deliver
 cost savings."
Many customers are migrating to Linux on the eServer mainframe as the
platform of choice for server consolidation projects. These server
consolidation projects often result in the need for hundreds of Linux servers
 to support the migrated applications.
"More and more of IBM's customers are consolidating entire server farms
onto IBM eServer mainframes running Linux," said Dan Colby, general manager,
IBM eServer zSeries. "BMC Software's Deployment Manager for Linux can help
these customers realize the full potential of their Linux on the eServer
mainframe investment while reducing costs and increasing performance."
Deployment Manager for Linux enables administrators to transparently
deploy, maintain and upgrade software for thousands of heterogeneous Linux
nodes, images and applications from a single console according to preset
rules. For example, Deployment Manager for Linux automatically deploys the
latest security updates through a single console, simplifying remote
deployment and securing companies' mission-critical Linux environments.
Deployment Manager for Linux delivers an additional level of confidence by
offering software and hardware certification, distribution, deployment and
policy management services. It ensures maximum uptime and performance by
enabling customers to deploy software combinations that have been pre-tested
for interoperability, scalability and performance in extensive automated
certification laboratories. Deployment Manager for Linux and PATROL(R) for
Linux Enterprise Server recently were selected as finalists in the LinuxWorld
 Open Source Product Excellence Awards.
"It can be difficult to implement changes to a large enterprise with
numerous Linux images without disrupting systems that are already in place,"
said Lori Allen, vice president, Linux Solutions, BMC Software. "Deployment
Manager for Linux improves efficiency and productivity by automating the
planning and deployment process while reducing the previously high cost of
Linux configuration management. Additionally, with our certification lab,
customers can be assured that our solutions will enhance the manageability of
 their mission-critical Linux environment."
     Pricing and Availability
Deployment Manager for Linux is available now. Pricing for Deployment
Manager for Linux varies depending on the platform. Distributed pricing for
Intel-based servers starts at $640 per server while mainframe-based pricing
starts at $91,000 per IFL engine.
     Linux Solution Update
In January, BMC Software announced a number of Linux solutions with
upcoming availability. Now generally available, PATROL(R) Internet Server
Manager, PATROL for BEA WebLogic, Enterprise Management for Linux, CONTROL-
M(R) for Linux for zSeries, PATROL Perform and PATROL Predict for Linux (for
Intel) enable customers to manage the entire Linux lifecycle. PATROL for
WebSphere Application Server is expected to be available later this fall.
