Borders Celebrates Visit of the Dalai Lama

'Illuminating the Path' 2000, June 25-30

    ANN ARBOR, Mich., June 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Borders Books and Music stores
 nationwide and will celebrate His Holiness the Dalai Lama's
 historic "Illuminating the Path" visit in Los Angeles, Calif., this month with
 in-store events and special online content and resources that highlight
 Buddhist tradition and the Dalai Lama.  Borders is the official book and music
 seller for the "Illuminating the Path" event, presented by Thubten Dhargye
 Ling, June 25-30, at the Los Angeles Sports Arena.
     In anticipation of the Dalai Lama's visit, has created its own
 Dalai Lama Center, , complete with a Buddhist
 primer, interviews with important Buddhist authors, a reading room with select
 titles on Buddhism and an opportunity for customers to win a set of the Dalai
 Lama's books, autographed by the author.
     As the official bookseller, Borders will have a self-contained bookstore
 at the Dalai Lama's appearances, June 25 through 30, at the Los Angeles Sports
 Arena, where the Buddhist leader will give a public address and offer
 teachings and commentary.  The Borders store will be well-stocked with topical
 titles, including books by the Dalai Lama, and "Atisha's Lamp for the Path to
 Enlightenment," one of the founding texts of Buddhist tradition.  Borders will
 also offer an exclusive, commemorative journal at the event.
     Borders Books and Music stores will hold a number of events in conjunction
 with the visit.  Scheduled events include:
     *  June 3, 7 p.m.:  The Borders store in Westwood, Calif., 1360 Westwood
 Blvd., will host Geshe Tsultim Gyeltsen, founder of Thubten Dhargye Ling, one
 of the premier Buddhist education centers in the nation, for a book signing of
 "Compassion: The Key to Great Awakening."
     *  June 6, 7:30 p.m.:  The Borders store in Santa Barbara, Calif., 900
 State Street, will hold a lecture and book signing with B. Alan Wallace,
 Ph.D., author of "Boundless Heart: The Cultivation of the Four Immeasurables."
     *  June 7, 12:30 p.m.:  The Borders store in Boston, Mass., 10-24 School
 Street, will host Lama Surya Das, the most highly trained American lama in the
 Tibetan tradition, for a book signing of "Awakening to the Sacred."
     *  June 8, 6 p.m.:  The Borders store in New York City, 461 Park Avenue,
 will host Robert Thurman, co-founder of Tibet House New York and friend of the
 Dalai Lama for 35 years, for a book signing of "Inner Revolution."
     *  June 14, 6 p.m.:  The Borders store in Boston, Mass., 10-24 School
 Street, will partner with the Insight Meditation Society and Shambhala
 Publications to bring Sharon Salzberg and three contributors to her book,
 "Voices of Insight."  These teachers of Buddhism will come to share their
 wisdom, stories and experiences of Insight Meditation.
     *  June 20, 6 p.m.:  The Borders in Santa Monica, Calif., 1415 Third St.
 Promenade, will host Ani Panchen, author of "Sorrow Mountain."  The memoir
 tells of Ani's life as a member of the Tibetan resistance, her long
 imprisonment and eventual release and flight to Dharamsala, the home-in-exile
 of the Dalai Lama.
     In addition to these events and the special content on, a
 Borders Electronic Gift Card, featuring a mandala, the sacred circle of
 Tibetan Buddhism, is being issued in honor of the Dalai Lama's visit.  The
 card will be available in a $10 denomination and customizable denominations at
