Boston Ranks as Most Expensive U.S. Destination

BOSTON, Oct. 2, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Boston is the United States' most expensive city based on the cost of lodging. That finding is according to a new survey from CheapHotels.org, which compared the 50 most popular U.S. cities. Each locale's hotel rates during the month of October served as the basis of comparison.

For comparative purposes, October is quite a good month. That's because, according to data from CheapHotels.org, the majority of the big cities reach their highest hotel rates during that month. Only a few cities, for example New York City and Atlanta, are slightly more expensive in September. As might be expected, certain beach destinations, such as San Diego and Virginia Beach, are more expensive during August, of course.

In Boston, travelers will have to pay $242 per night during October, and that's for the most affordable double room. Only such hotels rated a minimum of 3 stars were considered for the survey. Thus the Massachusetts capital is significantly more expensive than even New York City, which ranks as the runner-up with an average rate of $226 nightly.

Third most expensive and perhaps a bit surprisingly is Nashville. In the Tennessee capital the most affordable double rooms are going for $217 per night. Least expensive according to the survey are Las Vegas and Orlando, where guest can secure a 3-star hotel room for less than $50 nightly.

The following table shows the 10 most expensive cities in the USA. The prices shown reflect the average rate for each destination's cheapest available double room for the time period spanning October 1 through October 31, 2013.

  1. Boston $242
  2. New York City $226
  3. Nashville $217
  4. San Francisco $178
  5. Austin $174
  6. Washington DC $173
  7. Pittsburgh $167
  8. Houston $165
  9. Louisville $164
  10. Columbus $164
