Briggs Auto Group hosts safe teen driving program in Kansas
Tire Rack Street Survival aims to give young drivers hands-on experience in real-world situations
TOPEKA, Kan., Oct. 21, 2013 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- The leading killer of American youths aged 16 to 19 is motor vehicle crashes. Last year, vehicular accidents accounted for more than 40 percent of fatalities in that age bracket. In an effort to reduce that number, the Tire Rack Street Survival safe teen driving program was developed. The program is aimed at teaching teenage drivers crucial driving tips through hands-on experience in real-world situations.
The Tire Rack Street Survival program will be held in Topeka next Saturday, Oct. 26, at Heartland Park. Briggs Auto Group is among the sponsors of the educational event. All licensed and permitted drivers between the ages of 15 and 21 and their parents are encouraged to attend. The program will begin at 8 a.m. and run until 5 p.m. The registration fee is $75 per student and will include a lunch. Interested participants can register online.
The Street Survival "schools" are one-day events which combine roughly two hours in a classroom with six hours of in-car exercises. Students use their own car to learn its handling limits and how to better control the vehicle. Some of the maneuvers include skid control on a wet road, threshold braking and accident avoidance. For obvious safety concerns, all scenarios are completed at low speeds and coaches are in the student's car at all times during the exercises.
Since its launch in 2003, participation in the Tire Rack Street Survival program has increased every year. In 2012, the program held 93 schools in over 60 different locations, and this year program advisors expect to hold more than 100 schools around the country.
