BOSTON, May 14, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Margaret Bovill-Hawkins, Director of the Student Success Program at BHCC, has been chosen as a 2012 recipient of the Manuel Carballo Governor's Award for Excellence in Public Service. The annual award recognizes ten State employees or groups of employees who exemplify the highest standards of public service. Criteria for selection include exceptional accomplishments, leadership, creativity and innovation.
Bovill-Hawkins has taken a strong leadership role as BHCC team leader of the National Coalition Building Institute (NCBI), a non-profit leadership training organization that works to eliminate prejudice and conflict in communities throughout the world. Bovill-Hawkins received her initial leadership training in 2009. In the past year she has taken on increased responsibilities, led additional diversity workshops, and served as senior trainer for more recently trained leaders.
"My goal is to work with faculty and staff to embrace diversity," said Bovill-Hawkins. BHCC is one of the most diverse institutions of higher education in Massachusetts. Six in ten students are people of color and more than half of BHCC's students are women. The College also enrolls more than 780 international students who come from more than 90 countries and speak 75 different languages.
One of the College's goals is to "demonstrate strength through diversity." This goal includes expanding academic and campus activities that promote cultural competencies and strengthening intercultural competency among faculty, staff and students.
