Businesses Rally to Aid Westchester Family Farm After Tragic Fire
ELMSFORD, N.Y., May 28, 2013 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- Hemlock Hill Farm in Cortlandt Manor, one of the last working family farms in Westchester County, experienced a tragic fire, destroying the farm's barn, and taking the lives of scores of the farm's chickens on April 25th 2013. Several local businesses led by Scott Vaccaro of Captain Lawrence Brewing Company, will be joining together for a week long fundraising series in June. Their goal is to 'Raise the Barn' and help ensure the vitality and future of Hemlock Hills, one of the last remaining vestiges of Westchester's once rich agricultural roots.
Hemlock Hill opened in 1939, and has been owned and operated by three generations of the DeMaria family. Hemlock Hills has entered into a partnership with the State and County to preserve the land that the farm sits on as protected farmland, safe from development. This has also helped to protect an important part of the areas watershed.
Organized by Captain Lawrence Brewing Co., several area businesses will be holding a week-long fundraiser to help rebuild the barn, and ensure the future of Hemlock Hill in Westchester County. Brew-master/Owner Scott Vaccaro along with farm owners Laura and John DeMaria have organized some unique events at the brewery including the return of CLBC's Annual Pig Roast June 22nd 2013, with a portion of the proceeds going to benefit Hemlock Hill. Scott Vaccaro said of the fundraising events; "We are fortunate to still have productive farms in Westchester. Our hope is to raise enough money to rebuild the main barn, and in the process to give back to a great local business."
Other local establishments have come to the aid including Restaurant North of Armonk, NY (www.restaurantnorth.com) Village Dog of Tarrytown, NY (www.VillageDogTarrytown.com) and The Tapp (www.thetappny.com) also of Tarrytown. These three great dining destinations will be incorporating meats and produce straight from Hemlock Hill, so that guests at these events can enjoy true 'Farm to Table' experiences. The fundraising begins Father's Day June 16th and runs straight through to the annual pig roast Saturday June 22nd.
