Holocaust Survivor reveals Secret Story of Childhood, Escape In New Book

Author and Holocaust survivor Leon Malmed kept a secret for more than 60 years – a secret he now unveils in his moving new book, "We Survived…At Last I Speak." Mr. Malmed, a charismatic senior executive with leading Silicon Valley high tech companies, never shared his years in France during World War II with his colleagues or business associates.

"It was too emotional to talk to anyone about it, even to my close family," Mr. Malmed says.

When World War II broke out in Europe, Mr. Malmed was three years old and living with his parents and sister in Compiegne, France. The family was Jewish. When their parents were arrested by the French Police in 1942, their French Christian neighbors, the Ribouleaus, offered to watch the children until they returned. All thought it would just be for a few hours. It turned into a life time: Mr. Malmed's parents were deported to Auschwitz, and exterminated at the notorious concentration camp.

The Ribouleau family gave the Malmed children a home and love. But for the next three years, the children were forced to play a harrowing game of hide-and-seek with the Nazis. They violated German orders and never wore the Jewish star, instead hiding their Jewish identity. They often had to flee during Nazi roundups, spent days hiding in basements, fields, and in the nearby forest.

"We Survived…At Last I Speak" from Zea Books at the University of Nebraska is Mr. Malmed's gripping tale of how he and his sister escaped from the Holocaust in Occupied France. It's a narrative of love and courage set against a backdrop of tragedy, fear, injustice, prejudice, and the greatest moral outrage of the modem era. It is a story of goodness triumphing, once more, over evil.

"Wow ... what a magnificent book. I was unable to put it down. Poignant.Beautifully written. A great read for adults and teenagers as well." A reader.
