FRESNO, Calif., June 11, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Celebrate the fresh California grape season with the "One Ingredient That Can Change Everything" contest on the Grapes from California Facebook page.

Celebrity chef, best-selling author and TV host Ellie Krieger, M.S., R.D., will serve as contest judge. Consumers are invited to submit a healthy snack or meal idea incorporating grapes from California for the chance to win a $1,000 cash prize and a signed copy of Krieger's book.

"Grapes from California add a punch of flavor, texture and nutrition to any meal, snack or just on their own," said Jeff Cardinale, vice president of marketing communications for the commission. "We hope this contest will encourage consumers to experiment with using grapes in new ways. Mixed into a smoothie, layered on a sandwich or tossed into a salad, grapes truly are the one ingredient that can change everything."

The "One Ingredient That Can Change Everything" contest will run on the Grapes from California Facebook page from June 7th through August 30th. The Grand Prize winner will be selected by Ms. Krieger and will be announced on the Facebook page in September.

"I'm thrilled to be working with grapes from California again this season and I'm honored to be judging the contest entries," says Krieger, who is known for her everyday, down-to-earth focus on healthy yet flavorful food. "California grapes check all the boxes for me: nutritious, convenient, and great-tasting, all in one powerful little package."

Grapes of every color contain a variety of antioxidants and other polyphenols, natural components in grapes that may contribute to a healthy heart. And, with just 90 calories, no fat, no cholesterol and virtually no sodium in a ¾ cup serving of grapes, you can feel good about mixing grapes into just about any dish or eating them one by one. Apart from being a natural source of beneficial antioxidants, grapes also contain potassium and are a good source of vitamin K, which plays a role in helping blood to clot.
